Description
Half Moon Bay is the largest town in a valley, bordering the ocean and blocked from the mainland by these mountains. Most days of the year the town is at the very least overcast, and often these mountains are covered in fog. Hikers who explore these mountains during that time often claim to see strange shapes flickering at the edge of their vision, concealed by the fog.
On the occasions that they've been asked, the Goblins claim that the mists and trees are like their home- their old home, not the tunnels they presently dwell in. In several trips off the beaten path, humans have discovered runes of (what is thought to be) concealment carved into rocks and trees in various parts of the mountains. Attempts to remove these runes for further study have resulted in strange accidents- paper to copy them suddenly gets covered in mud and rendered unusable, trying to pocket a rock and carry it back results in somebody tripping and losing the rock. When a picture is taken, the negatives never develop properly.
Humans who have wandered off the trail for too long will find themselves lost, traveling in circles, until eventually they wind up back at the point they started in with no clear idea of how they got there. Children lost in these mountains are sometimes never found again- they run off and vanish.
